One Piece star addresses backlash to Charithra Chandran’s casting as Vivi in Netflix series

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece is preparing for its second season, set to release in 2026, and discussion around casting has intensified following a recent teaser.

The preview, unveiled during a franchise celebration in Tokyo, introduced new characters including Lera Abova as Nico Robin, Callum Kerr as Smoker, and Charithra Chandran as Vivi.

Chandran’s casting has drawn online debate, with some fans noting differences between her appearance and Vivi’s depiction in the original anime.

In response, Rob Colletti, who plays Wapol in the series, addressed the criticism on social media. He questioned why some viewers accepted fictional elements such as “rubber pirates” and “giant walking, talking fish” but objected to a character being portrayed by a non-white actor.

Colletti reiterated that One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda personally selected Chandran for the role and highlighted that the Kingdom of Alabasta is influenced by Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures.

He expressed appreciation for fans who have welcomed the casting and encouraged them to continue challenging discriminatory behaviour within the fandom.

He also stated that negative reactions based solely on race were “ignorant” and urged detractors to reconsider their stance. Chandran, in turn, acknowledged supportive messages on her Instagram, while sharing examples of criticism she had received.

Season 2 of One Piece will continue adapting the manga’s storyline, with new and returning characters joining the ensemble cast when the series returns on Netflix in 2026.
