Production has officially begun on Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated The Chronicles of Narnia film adaptation for Netflix, with filming now underway in the UK.

The project marks Gerwig’s second major production in the country following her record-breaking 2023 hit Barbie, which grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide.

The shoot is primarily based at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, with location scenes already spotted in central London. The star-studded cast includes Emma Mackey, Daniel Craig, and Carey Mulligan, while unconfirmed reports suggest Meryl Streep is in talks to voice Aslan, the iconic lion of Narnia. Amy Pascal is producing the film.

Scheduled for a two-week global Imax run in November 2026 before debuting on Netflix that Christmas, the adaptation is expected to be a major event release for the streaming platform. Gerwig wrote the screenplay, which adapts C.S. Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew — the sixth book in the original Narnia series but a prequel to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The story follows two children who discover a magical world, meet Aslan, and witness the creation of Narnia.

Netflix secured the rights to the entire Chronicles of Narnia series in 2018 and confirmed Gerwig as writer-director in 2020. The last screen adaptations were Disney’s live-action films, which covered the first three novels between 2005 and 2010. With Gerwig at the helm and an acclaimed ensemble cast, Netflix’s Narnia is set to bring a fresh cinematic vision to one of fantasy literature’s most beloved worlds.
