'Weapons' ending explained: The truth behind the mystery of 17 children vanishing from home

The 2025 horror film Weapons directed by Zach Cregger, centres on a chilling mystery: at 2:17 am, 17 pupils from Mrs Gandy’s class left their homes and vanished into the night. Only Alex (Cary Christopher) remained, raising questions that drive the plot.

Parents, including Archer Graff (Josh Brolin), suspect teacher Justine Gandy (Julia Garner) knows more than she admits. As tension escalates, the narrative shifts between multiple perspectives, revealing the involvement of Alex’s Aunt Gladys (Amy Madigan), a witch whose spells immobilise his parents and feed on their energy.

Gladys manipulates Alex into stealing his classmates’ nametags, enabling her to summon them to her basement. She also “weaponises” individuals, controlling them to hunt and kill. This power turns school principal Andrew (Benedict Wong) into an attacker, and later ensnares Justine’s ex, Paul (Alden Ehrenreich).

A fragile alliance between Justine and Archer leads them to Alex’s house, where they fight off brainwashed assailants. Alex, facing danger from his own parents, reverses the magic — turning the children against Gladys. The group overpowers and kills her, breaking the spells and restoring those under her control.

The film closes with Alex’s parents institutionalised and him placed with a caring aunt. The children return home, though some remain traumatised, underscoring the lasting impact of Gladys’ dark magic.

Weapons is now playing in cinemas, offering a dark, supernatural twist on small-town horror and the lengths people will go to reclaim the ones they love.
