Nearly five years after Jennifer Meyer filed for divorce, Tobey Maguire has officially responded. The actor is now requesting joint custody of their 16-year-old son, Otis, and has asked that financial matters such as child and spousal support be settled privately through mediation. The former couple reportedly has a prenuptial agreement in place, which could simplify those discussions.

Maguire and Meyer publicly announced their separation in 2016 after nearly a decade of marriage. However, it wasn’t until 2020 that Meyer officially filed for divorce. Despite the legal delay, both appeared to have moved on with their lives. Meyer, a successful jewellery designer, is now engaged to billionaire heir Geoffrey Ogunlesi.

The custody request comes just as their daughter Ruby has turned 18, meaning Otis is the only minor child still involved in custody arrangements. Maguire's filing appears to mark the final phase of a long-unfolding divorce process that has mostly played out away from the spotlight.

The move has stirred interest online not only because of the time that has passed since the couple’s initial split but also due to Maguire's typically private approach to his personal life. Some commenters noted the irony of such a delayed legal response given the public nature of their separation nearly a decade ago. Others speculated whether Meyer’s new engagement may have prompted Maguire to take action after years of silence.

There has been no comment from either party regarding the filing. Maguire, who has maintained a low profile outside his film work, was last seen attending the Cannes premiere of Killers of the Flower Moon in 2023.
