Police launched a crackdown on a sit-in protest by government employees at the Provincial Assembly Chowk on Friday, using tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. Several key leaders of the protest were arrested during the operation.
The protest, ongoing for the past four days, was organized by the All Government Employees Grand Alliance (AGEGA), demanding a 30 per cent disparity allowance in line with federal government employees, instead of the 15 per cent offered by the provincial government.
In the provincial budget session earlier this year, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government had announced a 15 per cent disparity allowance based on the 2017 initial basic pay. Government employees rejected this, staging a protest on June 25 at Assembly Chowk.
