Veteran Bay Area sportscaster Greg Papa has announced he is stepping away from his broadcast responsibilities after being diagnosed with cancer. In a statement shared Friday via KNBR and read on-air by program director Mike Hohler, Papa, 62, said he is undergoing treatment and will be focusing fully on his recovery.
“As I fully focus on my treatment and work toward a full recovery, I’m stepping away from my broadcasts but look forward to returning soon,” Papa shared. “Thanks to everyone for your prayers and good wishes as I begin this fight. Go Niners!”

Papa, who has served as the play-by-play voice for the San Francisco 49ers since 2019, will temporarily hand over his radio hosting duties on KNBR’s weekday “Papa & Silver” show to his co-host Greg Silver. Silver confirmed he will continue the program with the help of guest co-hosts during Papa’s absence. “Our show and our entire station are here to support him throughout his entire absence,” Silver wrote on X. “We can’t wait to welcome him back at full strength.”
In addition to his radio work, Papa has been a fixture in Bay Area sports media for decades, having worked with nearly every major team in the region. His résumé includes play-by-play commentary for the Raiders, Warriors, Giants, Athletics, and 49ers, as well as studio hosting for NBC Sports Bay Area’s SportsTalk Live, Giants Pre & Postgame Live, and Warriors Pre & Postgame Live.
The 49ers organization also released a public message of support on X, honoring Papa’s contributions to the team and the sport. The team encouraged fans to share their favorite moments from his broadcasts, which often feature his signature call, “Touchdown San-Fran-CISCO!”
