A new ballroom is set to be added to the White House as part of a large-scale expansion of the East Wing, with construction scheduled to begin in September.
The $200 million project is being funded by President Donald Trump and other unnamed donors.
The proposed 90,000-square-foot facility will include seating for approximately 650 guests and aims to host formal events that currently rely on smaller rooms or temporary outdoor setups.
White House officials say the project is designed to complement the existing architecture, featuring classical interiors with chandeliers and columns.
The plan marks the fulfillment of a long-standing ambition for Trump, who previously offered to fund a ballroom during President Obama’s administration.
That proposal was declined at the time. Now, with private backing secured, the new addition is moving ahead with the stated goal of supporting future administrations.
According to officials, the new space will reduce the need for large tents on the White House lawn during major events.
Offices in the current East Wing, including those of the First Lady, will be temporarily relocated during the build.
Renderings of the project show a structure that maintains architectural continuity with the White House while offering expanded capacity for state functions and ceremonial occasions.
Construction is expected to conclude before the end of Trump’s current term in January 2029.
