Demi Lovato has officially returned to the pop music scene with the release of her latest single, Fast, which debuted Thursday night. The track is the lead single from her forthcoming ninth studio album and marks a stylistic shift back to pop following her previous rock-inspired record, Holy Fvck.

Lovato began teasing Fast in mid-July on Instagram, where she lip-synced lyrics from the track, building anticipation among fans: “‘Cause baby honestly / I just wanna feel your hands all over me…” The full music video expands on the track’s fiery energy, showing Lovato strutting among burning cars while singing the high-octane chorus: “I wanna go fast / I wanna go hard / I wanna go anywhere, anywhere you are.”

Lovato’s return to pop will be shaped by producer Zhone, known for collaborations with Kesha, Troye Sivan, and Charli XCX. In a statement to Rolling Stone, Zhone praised her evolution as an artist, saying, “She is such a master in the studio. This album is about letting inhibitions go, and we had so much fun making this music!”

Fast follows Lovato’s 2023 project Revamped, which reimagined past hits from her discography with updated production. Her return to music also comes nearly a year after her directorial debut with Child Star, a documentary that explored the challenges of growing up in the spotlight. The project featured interviews with Drew Barrymore, Christina Ricci, JoJo Siwa, and other former child stars.

Lovato recently married musician Jordan “Jutes” Luts, adding another personal milestone as she steps into a new era of artistry.
