Proton launches new, 2FA authenticator app
Proton, the privacy-centric productivity tool company, has unveiled its latest offering - a new authenticator app designed to bolster online security with dynamically generated two-factor authentication (2FA) codes.
The authenticator app, which was announced through a blog post, is now available for free across all major platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux. Proton Authenticator promises to add an extra layer of protection for users' online accounts.
The app allows seamless syncing of login codes and accounts across multiple devices.
Proton stresses that, like its other services, Proton Authenticator is open-source and utilises end-to-end encryption to safeguard user data, ensuring a secure and transparent user experience.

"Two-factor authentication is essential for everyone - not just those who care about their privacy," said Eamonn Maguire, Head of Account Security at Proton.
"We believe strong security should never come at the cost of convenience or privacy," he added, highlighting the company’s focus on giving users full control over their data and how they access their accounts.
Proton Authenticator simplifies the process by enabling users to easily import their login codes from other authentication apps, and it automatically backs up the codes for future use.
Additionally, the app functions offline, providing users with 2FA codes even when they don't have an active internet connection, as reported by Tech Crunch.
Proton’s continued product expansion also saw the recent release of its privacy-first AI chatbot, Lumo, which doesn't retain any conversation records or use user data to train its models.
With the launch of Proton Authenticator, the company strengthens its commitment to privacy, ensuring that users can protect their accounts without relying on larger tech companies like Google or Microsoft.
