A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on July 29, 2025, triggering tsunami alerts across the Pacific Ocean, including the US West Coast.
Officials upgraded the alert in Northern California to a tsunami warning, while the rest of the coast, including San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California, was placed under a tsunami advisory.
Authorities expect the first wave to impact Crescent City around 11:50 pm, followed by Monterey at 12:15 am, and Los Angeles Harbor near 1 am local time.
While scientists do not anticipate widespread coastal inundation, strong currents, harbor surges, and small flooding of beach areas remain serious hazards.
In Hawaii, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a full tsunami warning. Residential evacuations began at 7 pm HST, and sirens were activated across coastal zones, including Honolulu, where beaches and hotel zones were cleared.
The tsunami threat spread across multiple regions, including Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska, with Japan also evacuating over 900,000 residents and predicting waves up to 3 meters along coastal areas.
Residents in affected coastal communities are urged to stay away from beaches, harbors, and shorelines, and to follow instructions from emergency officials until the advisory is lifted.
