Jay-Z is backing a proposal to open a Caesars Palace Casino in New York’s Times Square, describing the idea as a perfect opportunity to revitalize the area. On July 23, the rapper and business mogul appeared at a committee hearing alongside Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez, SL Green, and Caesars Entertainment to discuss their bid for one of three downstate casino licenses.

Calling Times Square the "perfect place" for such a project, Jay-Z emphasized that their collaboration reflects the real spirit of New York. He said the plan aligns well with their broader goals of cultural integration, adding, “I’m trying to reserve myself — it’s a very good idea.” The proposed development includes a five-star, 992-room hotel, luxury dining, a wellness center, nightlife venues, and gaming — all housed in a renovated office building at 1515 Broadway. The partnership estimates the casino would generate over $7 billion in taxes, $26.7 billion for local businesses, and create more than 6,800 jobs.

Despite the projected economic benefits, the proposal has met strong resistance. On July 25, the No Times Square Casino coalition — which includes local residents, business owners, and Broadway representatives — staged a protest in Father Duffy Square. Broadway League President Jason Laks criticized the plan, arguing it threatens the neighborhood's identity and exploits the community for corporate profit. “Broadway represents creative vitality,” Laks said. “A casino would only set this area back.”

In response, Caesars stated the project would bring $250 million in community benefits to Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen, while creating 9,000 union jobs. They also promised monthly job fairs for members of Actors' Equity and the American Federation of Musicians, aiming to build support among the theater workforce.
