Ike Barinholtz is reportedly in negotiations to play tech mogul Elon Musk in Artificial, Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming AI-centered feature for Amazon MGM Studios, Deadline reports. The project marks a continued collaboration between Guadagnino and the studio, following previous films such as Challengers and Bones and All.

Artificial is described as a comedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence. While plot details remain largely undisclosed, multiple sources suggest the film draws inspiration from the real-life events at OpenAI in 2023—particularly the brief ousting and reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman during a turbulent period for the company.

Barinholtz, who recently earned his first Emmy nomination for his role as Sal Saperstein in Apple TV+’s The Studio, joins a cast that includes Andrew Garfield, Anora breakout Yura Borisov, and Cooper Koch. Monica Barbaro is also reportedly in talks for a role. The film’s script was written by Simon Rich (An American Pickle), who will also produce alongside David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford of Heyday Films, and producer Jennifer Fox.

Barinholtz is well-known for his versatility in comedy, both on television and film. In addition to The Studio, he co-created Netflix’s sports comedy Running Point, recently renewed for a second season, and has appeared in popular projects such as The Mindy Project, Blockers, and The Afterparty. He is represented by UTA, Artists First, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes.

Artificial continues Guadagnino’s streak of high-profile projects with Amazon MGM, which is also producing his upcoming drama After the Hunt—set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival and starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri. No release date for Artificial has been announced.
