Erik Menendez, one of the brothers convicted in the infamous 1989 murders of their parents, has been hospitalized due to kidney stones, TMZ reports. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) confirmed he was transported to an outside medical facility on Friday and is currently in fair condition.
Menendez’s attorney, Mark Geragos, initially described his client’s condition as serious, which has since been identified as kidney stones. As a result, state officials are considering a temporary medical furlough.
Sources tell TMZ that Governor Gavin Newsom is reviewing the case to determine whether a furlough is appropriate. Although the exact length of such a release remains unclear, it could last only until his health stabilizes. However, with a parole board hearing scheduled for August 22, there is speculation that he may remain out of prison pending that review.
The potential furlough comes amid growing attention to the Menendez case, which has seen renewed public and legal interest. Governor Newsom has previously expressed sympathy toward granting clemency to both Erik and his brother, Lyle Menendez.
More updates are expected as the situation evolves and the governor makes a decision regarding the inmate’s temporary release.
