On July 17, 2025, OpenAI released a major upgrade to ChatGPT, introducing a new "agent" feature that allows the AI to complete real-world tasks online.

This includes actions like browsing the web, filling out forms, researching information, and creating presentations, making ChatGPT more like a personal assistant than ever before.

The new ChatGPT agent combines two previous experimental tools, Operator and Deep Research, into one unified system.

Users can now ask ChatGPT to handle multi-step tasks, such as comparing competitor pricing, summarizing industry reports, or even helping with online shopping and bookings.

This feature is currently available to Pro, Plus, and Team subscribers, with a broader rollout expected for Enterprise and Education users later in the summer.

According to OpenAI, safety measures are in place. The agent pauses on sensitive tasks, asks for user approval before taking irreversible actions, and avoids financial-related tasks altogether.

The update marks a shift in how ChatGPT operates: it’s no longer just a chat companion but a functional, autonomous tool that can help users with productivity workflows.

The agent’s launch also puts OpenAI in direct competition with other AI companies offering advanced digital assistants.
