The annual US television awards ceremony was held on Sunday night at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre. The glitzy evening honoured ABC’s “Modern Family” with the best comedy accolade for the second consecutive year, along with four other prizes, including supporting actor, supporting actress, best writer and best director.

Meanwhile “Mad Men” received its fourth consecutive Emmy for best drama, staving off competition from the acclaimed HBO drama “Boardwalk Empire” and “Friday Night Lights.”

In a surprise win, the best drama actor award went to critically acclaimed “Friday Night Lights” star Kyle Chandler — beating out “Mad Men’s” Jon Hamm. CBS’ “The Good Wife” also picked up a trophy with Julianna Margulies winning the top drama female actress award to add to her 1995 supporting actress Emmy for “ER”.

Tears were also witnessed — notably from “Mike and Molly” star Melissa McCarthy who won best comedy actress, after she and her fellow nominees staged an “X-factor” style huddle on stage to await the opening of the envelope. British actor Kate Winslet won an Emmy for her highly acclaimed title role in “Mildred Pierce”, playing a mother during the Great Depression.

The night was also heavily peppered with hilarious sketches. Jane Lynch, who was hosting the Emmy’s, jokingly, told the audience at one point: “Many people ask me why I’m a lesbian... ladies and gentlemen, the cast of ‘Entourage’,” before the suited ensemble of the HBO show swaggered into the arena.
