David Corenswet, who stars as the titular hero in James Gunn’s reboot Superman, chose to watch the film for the first time at its Los Angeles world premiere — a deliberate decision aimed at sharing the moment with fans. Speaking with The New York Times, Corenswet said he wanted his first viewing of the highly anticipated film to be “with a crowd,” embracing the collective energy of the audience rooting for Superman.

“If I had seen it too early,” Corenswet admitted, “I might have felt more self-conscious and less what I felt that night, which is the spirit of the crowd rooting for Superman up there.” The actor explained that experiencing the premiere as part of the audience gave him a deeper connection to the character and reaffirmed his belief in the role’s cultural significance.

The 32-year-old actor, previously known for his work in Ryan Murphy’s Hollywood, acknowledged the weight of stepping into one of cinema’s most iconic roles. His portrayal marks a distinct tonal shift from Henry Cavill’s brooding Superman, instead offering a hopeful, earnest interpretation that mirrors Corenswet’s own grounded personality.

Director James Gunn, who also co-heads the newly revamped DC Studios, called Corenswet the clear choice for the role, emphasizing that despite other talented contenders, “Superman was David.” Corenswet’s first screen test in Cavill’s old suit and his theater-trained ability to adapt quickly impressed the creative team.

Now leading the charge in what could be the revitalization of the DC Universe, Corenswet continues to approach his role with humility. “If this is the last role I ever get to play,” he said, “I feel so humbled and grateful that I get to be the guy.”
