Protest causes traffic disruption in Karachi's Punjab Colony area

Protestors claim outage followed a K-Electric operation targeting illegal connections

KARACHI:

Residents of Dada Bhai building in Karachi's Punjab Colony area staged a protest against the prolonged suspension of electricity and water, blocking both roads leading to Defence Mor.

Electricity to the building’s 80 flats has been out since 11 am on Friday, with residents claiming K-Electric has failed to respond to multiple complaints, Express News reported.

Protestors alleged the outage followed a K-Electric operation targeting illegal connections in Punjab and P&T Colonies. A confrontation reportedly broke out in P&T Colony during the raid, after which power to the Dada Bhai Building was cut.

Residents said K-Electric is demanding an apology from those involved in the clash before restoring service. Protestors condemned the move as collective punishment, stating the wider building community is not at fault.

The protest caused heavy traffic congestion. Police redirected vehicles from the Gizri Underpass and diverted Korangi-bound traffic toward Khayaban-e-Jami.
