Larry David is returning to HBO in a new six-episode sketch comedy series created in collaboration with Barack and Michelle Obama.
The show, currently untitled, is being produced by the Obamas’ Higher Ground and is set to explore moments and lesser-known figures from American history in celebration of the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
David will star, write, and executive produce the series alongside longtime collaborator Jeff Schaffer, who will also direct. Higher Ground’s executive producers include Barack and Michelle Obama, Vinnie Malhotra, and Ethan Lewis.
The series is expected to include several recurring Curb Your Enthusiasm cast members and other surprise guests.
Known for his sharp wit and self-deprecating humor, David joked that the project came about after his short-lived attempt at beekeeping ended in failure.
“With a heavy heart, I return to television, hoping to ease the loss of my beloved hive,” he said in a statement.
Barack Obama added humor of his own, saying, “Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David,” despite years of tackling global diplomacy.
The show’s concept centers on minor characters from US history, people who didn’t make a big difference, and that’s exactly the point. It aims to provide a satirical, irreverent take on the forgotten corners of America’s past, blending Higher Ground’s socially conscious storytelling with David’s signature comedic chaos.
HBO has not yet announced a premiere date, but production is confirmed. Amy Gravitt, HBO’s head of comedy, called the project “a perfect blend of smart and ridiculous,” and praised the unique collaboration between the Obamas and one of HBO’s most iconic comedic voices.
With this project, David brings his voice back to television while the Obamas continue to expand their influence in storytelling, this time with a sharp comedic twist.
