Cierra Ortega has broken her silence following her abrupt exit from "Love Island USA" on July 6. Initially cited as a departure for “personal reasons,” her removal came amid online backlash over a resurfaced social media post in which she used a racial slur.
In an Instagram statement released on July 9, Ortega apologised directly to the Asian community, stating, “I am deeply, truly, honestly so sorry. I had no idea that the word held as much pain.”
She said the resurfaced content was from a time when she was “very naively using an incredibly offensive and derogatory term.” Ortega added, “I take accountability for using the word,” but emphasised she only learned it was a slur after a follower informed her in 2024.
Since her exit, Ortega reported severe consequences for her family, including allegations that ICE was called on them. “They no longer feel safe in their own home,” she claims.
Ortega also revealed she has received death threats, adding, “I don’t think that’s justice. If you want to know that you are heard and that I’m sorry... I promise you, that’s what will happen.”
Public reaction to her apology has been polarised. While many expressed disappointment over Ortega’s past comment, others criticised the extreme backlash. One user wrote, “Calling ICE on her family is literally deranged behaviour.”
Another added, “If you aren’t Asian then you have no place to accept her apology".
Supporters also called out performative activism, urging people to allow space for growth and accountability. “People make mistakes and deserve the chance to grow,” one post read.
