Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani revealed that the collapsed building in Lyari had a different plot number than initially reported.
The structure, built illegally 40-50 years ago without approval from the SBCA, had no official record.
To support displaced residents, the govt will provide three months' rent compensation. A dedicated rehabilitation committee led by Ghani has been formed, including officials from SBCA, the Pakistan Engineering Council, and others, to formulate long-term recovery plans. During a joint press conference with JI leaders, Ghani emphasised collaboration over politics, discussing solutions for city's challenges such as illegal construction, water and sewage issues, and solid waste management.
Opposition leader Saifuddin advocate urged the govt to offer six months' rent compensation and provide alternate housing to affected families.
Ghani also announced that a separate legal committee will draft new legislation to combat unauthorized construction. Ghani assured that financial aid for families affected by the Lyari tragedy has begun.
