Andy Samberg remembers Andre Braugher and their Brooklyn Nine-Nine bond after actor’s passing

Andy Samberg reflects on his friendship with late co-star Andre Braugher and their instant connection.

Andy Samberg paid tribute to his late Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-star Andre Braugher during a recent appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, reflecting on their off-screen bond and creative chemistry. Braugher, who died in 2023 at the age of 61 following a battle with lung cancer, left a lasting impression on both his colleagues and fans.

During the conversation, Poehler asked Samberg about his behind-the-scenes relationship with Braugher, whom she described as poised, talented, and seemingly fun. Samberg agreed, describing Braugher as “deeply moral, kind, and incredibly intelligent,” adding, “We all absolutely loved him. I miss him a lot.”

Samberg and Braugher starred alongside each other across all eight seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine from 2013 to 2021, portraying the evolving relationship between the playful Det. Jake Peralta and the stoic Capt. Raymond Holt. Samberg said their on-screen chemistry was immediate. “It was one of those things where you’re just like, ‘Okay, this is kismet,’” he said. He recalled meeting Braugher at the first table read, where their dynamic clicked naturally from the very first scene.

Though Braugher came from a serious dramatic background and was initially unsure about his comedic abilities, Samberg said he quickly became a standout. “He would do his Captain Holt stuff and it was the funniest thing on the show,” Samberg noted, praising Braugher’s ability to balance emotional depth and humor.

Following Braugher’s death, Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast members shared heartfelt tributes. Terry Crews thanked him for his wisdom and friendship, while Melissa Fumero remembered his deep love for family. The show’s official Instagram honored him with the message: “Always our Captain. We love you, Andre.” His legacy continues to resonate with fans and former castmates alike.
