Roger Federer made a high-profile appearance at Wimbledon on Monday, taking his seat in the Royal Box to watch long-time rival Novak Djokovic in action.
The seven-time Wimbledon champion was joined by his wife Mirka as they looked on during Djokovic’s fourth-round clash against Australia’s Alex de Minaur.
The 38-year-old Djokovic recovered from a lopsided first set to win 1–6, 6–4, 6–4, 6–4, advancing to his 16th Wimbledon quarter-final.
After the match, he addressed Federer’s presence with humor, saying it was “the first time Roger watched me win at Wimbledon,” and called it “a bit of a curse-breaker.”
Federer’s appearance drew cameras and attention throughout the match, marking a symbolic moment as the two icons one retired, one still chasing records shared the Wimbledon spotlight once again.
With this victory, Djokovic moves to 101 career Wimbledon match wins, closing in on Federer’s record of 105.
He’s now also just two matches away from a potential eighth title, which would equal Federer’s men’s singles record at the All England Club.
Djokovic will next face Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in the quarter-finals.
