The world of Michael Connelly's Bosch franchise is set to expand once again with the debut of Ballard, a new spinoff series premiering July 9 on Amazon Prime Video.
The show introduces Renée Ballard, played by Maggie Q, as the lead character in a fresh chapter that aims to stand apart from its predecessor while honouring its legacy.
Following the conclusion of Bosch: Legacy earlier this year, Ballard picks up with the titular LAPD detective investigating cold cases and long-unsolved homicides. Adapted from Connelly’s 2017 novel The Late Show, the new show shifts focus to a more collaborative setting. Ballard leads a team of detectives with diverse backgrounds to tackle complex cases, while the story unfolds with multiple interconnected mysteries.
Unlike Bosch: Legacy, which rolled out weekly, all 10 episodes of Ballard Season 1 will be released at once, starting Wednesday, July 9, at 3:00 a.m. ET (midnight PT) on Prime Video. This bingeable format means fans will need to steer clear of spoilers immediately upon release.
Though the series will feature a cameo from Titus Welliver, who played Harry Bosch in previous instalments, creators have stressed that Ballard will not rely heavily on nostalgia. Speaking to Collider, Maggie Q said the team was “not looking to rehash the same things,” and instead focused on original storytelling. “There’s so much richness there. These are complex people in a complicated city,” she said, noting that cameos will only occur if they serve the plot.
Franchise creator Michael Connelly and Q have crafted Ballard to reflect new themes and challenges. “Bosch was isolated and Hollywood-centric,” Q explained, adding that Ballard’s world is broader, involving ocean settings, community engagement, and a team-oriented dynamic. The show will explore issues Bosch rarely dealt with, such as institutional sexism and leadership under pressure.
With Bosch: Legacy ending after three seasons, Ballard now carries the torch. Whether or not familiar characters like Maddie Bosch or Honey Chandler return, Ballard is set to chart its own path within the Bosch universe.
