LL Cool J pulls out of Philadelphia July 4th concert in solidarity with DC 33 strike

LL Cool J has withdrawn from Philadelphia’s July 4th Wawa Welcome America concert, citing support for striking District Council 33 workers. The hip-hop icon confirmed his decision in an Instagram post on Thursday night, just days before the scheduled performance.
“I never ever want to disappoint my fans, and especially in Philadelphia. Ya’ll mean too much to me, but there's absolutely no way that I could perform, cross a picking line, and pick up money when I know that people are out there fighting for a living wage,” he said.

The artist had been set to headline the concert alongside Jazmine Sullivan. Despite being in town, LL Cool J stated he would not cross the picket line to perform while union workers continue their strike.
District Council 33, representing approximately 9,000 city workers, including street repair teams, airport staff, 911 dispatchers, and water department employees, began striking at midnight on Tuesday. Their demands include improved wages and better working conditions. Trash has reportedly piled up in parts of the city as a result.
Union President Greg Boulware praised LL Cool J’s stance: “His support underscores the significance of the labour movement and its ongoing fight for justice and equity. We are grateful for his exemplary stance and the impact it has on raising awareness.”
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker acknowledged the decision in a public statement. “I respect his decision, and understand his desire to see the city unified. He is always welcome in Philadelphia.”
Negotiations between the union and city officials resumed briefly on Wednesday but ended without a resolution. A timeline for renewed talks has not been confirmed.
