Liverpool forward Diogo Jota aged 28, died in a car crash in Spain on July 3, alongside his brother André Silva.

The crash occurred near Zamora, in northwestern Spain, in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed the news shortly after, reporting that the two brothers had been traveling in a Lamborghini Urus when the vehicle veered off the A-52 motorway and caught fire.

A tyre blowout during high-speed overtaking is believed to have caused the accident. No other vehicles were involved. Both men died at the scene.

Jota leaves behind his wife, Rute Cardoso, and their three young children. The couple had married just twelve days earlier, on June 22.

In a short statement, Liverpool FC acknowledged the heartbreaking loss and asked for privacy for “Rute and the children during this incredibly painful time.”

For many who followed Jota’s career, he was more than just a sharp finisher or a reliable forward he was a player known for his quiet focus, work ethic, and humility.

Since joining Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, he made nearly 200 appearances, bringing energy and composure to every game. Internationally, he represented Portugal 31 times and scored 10 goals.

Investigations into the accident are still ongoing.
