30-plus drowning deaths prompt swimming ban

60-day prohibition enforced in Indus River

HYDERABAD:

In the backdrop of a sharp surge in drowning incidents, the Hyderabad Division administration has imposed a 60-day ban on swimming and bathing in the River Indus and its network of canals. The decision follows reports of over 30 drowning deaths in recent months, including several children, across the division.

The ban, enforced on the recommendation of deputy commissioners, was announced by the divisional commissioner in an attempt to prevent further loss of life. Local police have been directed to ensure strict compliance of the ban, although past efforts to curb swimming in these water bodies have seen limited enforcement.

This summer's record-breaking heat and prolonged electricity outages — both scheduled and unscheduled — by the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) pushed residents, particularly youth and children, to seek relief in rivers and canals.

Key locations such as Kotri Barrage to Habib Farm Kohsar, Al-Manzar Jamshoro, Karachi Wah (KB Feeder), Akram Wah, Pinyari, and Phuleli canals in and around Hyderabad turned into makeshift recreational spots, especially on weekends and public holidays.

However, the absence of safety measures, including lifeguards, warning signs, or designated swimming areas, led to a series of fatal incidents. Many people entered the deep and unpredictable waters without supervision or protective gear, resulting in a spike in drownings compared to previous years.

A rough estimate places the number of drowning fatalities at over 30 in just a few months. Officials say that the actual toll may be higher, particularly in rural districts of Hyderabad.
