Govt school head posts remain vacant
A significant staffing crisis has been revealed in Punjab's public education system, with 68 per cent of headmaster, headmistress, and principal positions lying vacant across government schools, including Rawalpindi.
Most of these institutions have been operating with junior teachers filling senior administrative roles for extended periods, due to a prolonged lack of promotions and new appointments.
Out of 5,067 sanctioned posts for Grade 17 headmasters, 3,661 are currently vacant.
Among the 1,673 grade 18 headmaster positions, only 500 are filled by temporary appointees. In grade 19, 37 per cent of the posts are manned by acting heads, while 303 out of 404 grade 20 principal positions are also held by temporary staff.
Similarly, 66 per cent of senior teacher positions in Grade 19 and 55 per cent in Grade 18 remain unfilled.
Across Punjab, 3,661 headmaster seats are vacant, with only 1,406 appointed.
For subject specialists in higher secondary schools, 5,648 posts remain empty while only 469 are occupied.
There are 494 vacant senior headmaster posts, compared to 1,179 filled.
