Jennifer Aniston to play toxic mom in a dramedy based on Jennette McCurdy’s ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’
Jennifer Aniston is taking on one of her boldest roles yet - playing a controlling, narcissistic mother in a new Apple TV+ dramedy inspired by Jennette McCurdy’s explosive memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died. The series, officially greenlit for 10 episodes, is set to explore the harrowing and darkly funny complexities of mother-daughter dynamics in the spotlight.
Aniston, who also executive produces the show via her Echo Films banner, will portray the overbearing mother of an 18-year-old actress caught in the pressure cooker of child stardom. The character is described as someone who thrives on being ‘a starlet’s mother,’ mirroring the deeply personal themes McCurdy explored in her 2022 memoir, a raw and often heart-breaking account of her life as a young star under the thumb of a domineering parent.
The series is written and co-run by McCurdy herself alongside Ari Katcher (Ramy), with production led by Apple Studios. Other executive producers include Sharon Horgan and Stacy Greenberg (Merman), LuckyChap’s Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, and comedian Jerrod Carmichael.
This marks a continued partnership between Aniston and Apple TV+, where she stars in the hit series The Morning Show, returning this September for its fourth season. It also follows the streamer’s award-winning collaboration with Horgan on Bad Sisters.
McCurdy’s memoir spent over 80 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list and has become a cultural flashpoint for conversations around trauma, fame, and healing. With Aniston at the centre, the adaptation is poised to bring its sharp wit and emotional honesty to a whole new audience.
