On June 29, 2025, actor Abby Elliott reflected on her departure from Saturday Night Live in 2012. She said, “That was the worst that could happen, and then it did,” referring to her experience of being let go from the show after four seasons.

Elliott joined SNL in 2008. She is the daughter of comedian Chris Elliott and granddaughter of Bob Elliott, making her the first second-generation female cast member in the show’s history.

She has said that during her time on the show, she often felt uncertain about her standing, especially when not featured in weekly episodes.

Her exit occurred during a period of broader cast changes, which also included the departures of Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg.

Following SNL, Elliott shifted her focus to scripted television. She has since appeared in several series, including her current role as Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto in The Bear.

Season 4 of the series premiered on June 25, 2025. The show’s ensemble has received recognition from major award bodies, including the Golden Globes.

Elliott’s comments reflect on a career transition following her time in live sketch comedy.
