Jake Paul extended his professional boxing record to 12-1 on Saturday night with a unanimous decision victory over former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Despite the win, Paul’s credibility as a serious contender remains a topic of debate among fans and critics alike, according to Sports Illustrated.

Paul controlled most of the bout, while Chavez appeared passive throughout. Over the first seven rounds, Chavez threw just 63 punches, landing only 21. He failed to connect at all in Round 1 and landed just nine punches across the first five. Chavez mounted a more aggressive offense in the final rounds, but it was too late to reverse the outcome. With the win, Paul now eyes a WBA ranking and a potential title shot.

However, the quality of Paul’s opposition continues to draw scrutiny. While Chavez Jr. is a former champion, critics point to his declining performance in recent years and inconsistency both in and out of the ring over the past decade.

Paul’s previous opponents have also raised eyebrows. He defeated a 58-year-old Mike Tyson in 2024 and suffered his only loss against Tommy Fury — considered his only legitimate boxing opponent — via split decision in 2023.

The online reaction was swift and critical, with fans flooding social media to label the event “a mockery of the sport.” Many questioned the legitimacy of Paul’s opponents and accused promoters of protecting his record.

Despite criticism, Paul remains a master self-promoter and continues to generate major revenue and attention. Until Paul faces younger, more competitive boxers, questions around his credibility in professional boxing are unlikely to fade.
