Police process: Dumped body identified as abducted scrap dealer

DSP suggests another man found seriously injured ‘slashed his own throat’.

LAHORE:

The police have identified a man found dead in a sack dumped in a drain in Township as a scrap dealer kidnapped last Thursday, while doctors managed to save another who was found stuffed in a sack with a serious gash in his throat.

Both were discovered on Saturday, though police have not been able to identify the man with the neck wound or even establish whether he was the victim of a crime.

Sub Inspector Abdul Ghafoor of Township police told The Express Tribune that the body found in the drain was at least two days old. He said it had bruises all over it, the victim apparently having been tortured.

He was later identified as a resident of Green Town who had been abducted on September 15.

SI Rizwan of Green Town police said the man was Muhammad Akram, 45, a father of three and a scrap dealer at Mian Chowk. He said that after Akram went missing on Thursday, his son Haseeb got a call on his mobile phone from Akram’s number saying he should get some money together for ransom. The kidnappers called again the next day to make a ransom demand of Rs1 million. The day after that, they called again to tell the family to await further instructions.

The sub inspector said that investigators had tried to trace Akram’s mobile phone but it was only switched on briefly. “We have some leads pointing to Akram’s neighbourhood. We will soon crack the case. It’s likely an old enmity,” he said.

Suicide attempt?

Meanwhile, the other man found in a sack near Qurtaba Chowk was said to be out of critical condition after surgery. Police officials said that doctors had to stitch up his trachea and food pipe. He has not been able to make a statement to the police yet.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Malik Muhammad Hussain told The Express Tribune on Saturday that the man had been dumped in an empty plot near Qurtaba Chowk from a car and it appeared to be a case of attempted murder.

However, on Sunday he said the man appeared to be a drug addict who may have slashed his own throat. He also disputed that the man had been found stuffed in a sack, saying that was the sack he used to sleep in on the streets.

According to the Rescue 1122 call of the incident, the man had been packed in the sack with his hands and feet tied and he had been shouting for help.
