Rail passengers suffer as cooling system collapses

This has reportedly led to a decline in passenger turnout and advance bookings.

RAWALPINDI:

All ceiling fans at Platform No 3 of Rawalpindi Railway Station have stopped functioning, adding to the misery of passengers during the current spell of intense heat and humidity. The air conditioning system on the platform has also broken down, significantly worsening conditions for travelers.

Women, children, and other passengers waiting for trains were seen drenched in sweat and forced to stand under the scorching sun with no relief from the heat.

Adding to passenger frustration, train fares have been increased following recent hikes in petrol and diesel prices. Fares for air-conditioned coaches have gone up by 3%, while economy class fares have increased by 4%.

This has reportedly led to a decline in passenger turnout and advance bookings. Similarly, freight charges and parcel rates have also been raised by 4%.

In a separate development, the station's washrooms have been outsourced to a private contractor, who has introduced a token-based entry system.
