Sugar data collection system planned
Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain chaired a high-level meeting on Monday to review and assess the country's sugar stock situation.
The meeting was attended by relevant stakeholders and senior officials from the food security ministry and the departments concerned.
In a major step towards ensuring transparency and efficiency in sugar sector management, the stakeholders decided to establish a mutually agreed data collection system and monitoring mechanism. These systems will be instrumental in accurately tracing the per-acre yield and overall production of sugarcane across the country, according to a press statement issued by the ministry.
Speaking on the occasion, the federal minister emphasised the importance of reliable and real-time data. He said that decisions regarding the import and export of sugar would henceforth be based on verifiable data collected through the new system. "This will help stabilise domestic markets and safeguard the interests of both farmers and consumers."
The minister directed all departments to work in close coordination to finalise and implement the proposed systems at the earliest, which would ensure uniformity, transparency and accountability in sugar sector management. The meeting affirmed the food security ministry's resolve to enhance policy decisions through data-driven approaches and to foster a sustainable agricultural economy.
