JPMC succeeds with first ERCP since 1996
A significant breakthrough has taken place in the Gastroenterology Department of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where, for the first time since 1996, a successful ERCP procedure has been completed. This intricate and cutting-edge medical intervention was carried out by Assistant Professor Dr Adil Hasan Chang, representing a vital step forward in carrying on the legacy of renowned gastroenterologist Dr Zia Ghani Abbas.
ERCP is a specialised endoscopic procedure designed to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas. During the process, a flexible, tube-like instrument — endoscope — is inserted through the patient's mouth and navigated into the stomach and the initial portion of the small intestine.
With the help of a special dye, X-ray images are used to visualise the structure and any blockages in the bile ducts and pancreas. This method is commonly employed for the diagnosis and treatment of gallstones, obstructions in the ducts, or cancer.
