Service stations must install recycling plants: LHC

Court blocks large home approvals sans water treatment plants

LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the installation of water recycling plants at all service stations across Punjab, in a significant move aimed at combating water wastage and environmental degradation.

Justice Shahid Karim issued the order while hearing a series of petitions concerning smog control, groundwater preservation, and public health.

He instructed deputy commissioners of all districts to ensure strict implementation of the court's directives.

"We must take immediate steps to prevent the misuse of water," Justice Karim observed during the proceedings.

The court emphasized the urgency of protecting natural resources and ensuring a clean and healthy environment for future generations.

The judge also reviewed a report on the restoration of the water treatment plant in Kasur, expressing concern over its prolonged closure. "Diseases are spreading due to the non-functional water treatment plant in Kasur," he remarked, adding that children were particularly vulnerable.

He called for immediate action to ensure the availability of clean drinking water in the district.

Justice Karim also praised the Central Business District (CBD) Authority for constructing a rainwater storage tank, highlighting its potential use in cleaning roads and watering plants. He urged other departments to adopt similar sustainable initiatives.

During the hearing, the Environment Department informed the court that its teams had launched efforts to curb stubble burning along the motorway, and were issuing challans to violators.

The judge asked for detailed reports from various departments on ongoing environmental and water conservation projects by next Friday.

In earlier proceedings, the Judicial Water and Environment Commission had proposed that prayer leaders (imams) in mosques be engaged in public awareness campaigns against water wastage.

Justice Karim also barred the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) from approving the construction of houses larger than one kanal without a dedicated water treatment plant, stressing the need for enforcement of building regulations.
