Novak Djokovic defeats Fucsovics to reach Geneva quarterfinals

Djokovic found rhythm in Geneva after early struggles on red dirt.

Novak Djokovic registered his first clay court victory of the season on Wednesday, easing past Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics 6-2, 6-3 to book a spot in the Geneva Open quarterfinals.

The 24-time grand slam winner had suffered early exits in Monte Carlo and Madrid, but looked sharp in Geneva, dominating from the baseline and not facing a single break point in the 75-minute match.

“This is my first win of the season on clay. It’s great to break the ice,” Djokovic said after the match. “Clay is a very demanding surface. You always have to expect an extra ball, an extra shot.”

The Serbian, who turns 38 on Thursday, is aiming for his 100th ATP title as he prepares for Roland Garros later this month.

His next opponent is Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi, the 24-year-old who knocked him out of the Madrid Open in April.

The win also marks Djokovic’s first on clay since he captured gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Last week, he confirmed he would continue without a coach after ending a short-lived partnership with Andy Murray.
