A man attending a job interview was surprised to discover the person on the other end was not human, but an artificial intelligence (AI) system designed to conduct interviews, highlighting the growing use of AI in hiring processes.

Leo Humphries, 25, from Houston, Texas, recorded his experience of being interviewed by a malfunctioning AI during a video call for a national company.

The AI repeatedly glitched and failed to let him respond, leaving Humphries confused and disappointed.

“At first, I wasn’t sure how to feel,” Humphries said after the incident. “I think in the moment I just felt a sense of disappointment.”

Humphries applied for the role through a news company’s website and was unaware beforehand that the interview would be conducted by AI.

During the call, the robotic voice repeatedly stuttered questions, and the system thanked him without allowing any answers.

Similar incidents have been shared by others, including TikTok user @its_ken04, who posted a video of an AI interviewer stuck in a loop.

Experts caution that while AI can improve efficiency in recruitment by handling large volumes of candidates, the technology is far from flawless.

Bryan Driscoll, an HR consultant, described the trend as “dehumanising” and criticised companies for prioritising cost-cutting over candidate experience.

“AI can reinforce bias, strip away nuance, and make it harder for underrepresented or nontraditional candidates to break through,” Driscoll said.

Josh Jones, CEO of generative AI company Quanthub, said AI’s use in interviews represents a “messy middle” stage where the technology is impressive but unreliable for high-stakes decisions.

As AI becomes embedded in hiring—from resume screening to interview conduct—experts urge caution to maintain fairness and preserve the human element in recruitment.

Humphries reflected on the implications: “On one hand, AI is efficient. On the other, it raises questions about personal connection and fairness. It definitely made me wonder how widespread this practice might become.”
