At least two people were killed Thursday morning when a small private plane crashed into a residential neighborhood in San Diego, according to local authorities.

The crash resulted in eight individuals sustaining minor injuries and caused significant property damage, with multiple homes destroyed in the impact and subsequent fire.

The aircraft went down in Murphy Canyon, a military housing area, during foggy conditions, sparking a major fire that destroyed multiple homes and vehicles.

Eerlier the assistant Fire Chief Dan Eddy said there were “more than one fatality” among those on board, although the exact number of passengers is still unknown. Officials believe the plane could have been carrying between eight and ten people.

Despite the devastation, no local residents were seriously injured. Police said nearly 100 people were evacuated as around 15 homes and numerous vehicles caught fire. Thick smoke and flames were reported across several blocks.

“When it hit the street, as the jet fuel went down, it took out every single car that was on both sides of the street,” Mr Eddy said. “You can see that every single car was burning down both sides of the street.”

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, including whether the aircraft may have struck a power line before impact.

Emergency crews remain at the scene, and a formal inquiry into the incident is under way.
