LHC orders province-wide circulars to conserve water
Expressing concern over the alarming decline in underground water levels, the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday directed the issuance of circulars across Punjab to promote water conservation and curb wastage.
Justice Shahid Karim issued the order while hearing a series of petitions related to environmental degradation, smog control, and groundwater preservation.
During the proceedings, the Judicial Water & Environment Commission submitted a report highlighting a worrying trend: Lahore's underground water level, which stood at 41% in 2022, had dropped to 40% by 2024.
Justice Karim voiced strong displeasure over the deteriorating situation, stating, "Lahore has been excessively dug up, and the air quality index in those areas is now critically poor." He underscored the urgency of immediate and collective action to reverse environmental damage and safeguard natural resources.
During the hearing, a member of the commission informed the court that the Punjab government has allocated a significant amount in the upcoming budget for the installation of water meters across the province.
Justice Karim welcomed and appreciated this move, terming it a positive step toward efficient water management.
The court emphasised the need for awareness and regulatory mechanisms to ensure sustainable usage of water, especially in urban areas where over-extraction is exacerbating the crisis.
