Model Town: Residents step into wedding tent row
Cooperatives registrar stays ‘construction’ of marquee.
LAHORE:
The Model Town Residents Association (MTRA) has obtained an order from the registrar for cooperative societies to stay the setting up of a tent for wedding ceremonies at the Model Town Club.
MTRA president Amer Bakht Azam filed the petition through his counsel Javed Iqbal Bhatti, arguing that the tent constituted a new construction and the lease deed signed by the Model Town Cooperative Housing Society and the Model Town Club did not allow this.
The registrar issued notice to all parties for the next hearing of the case on September 28 and ordered that the “ongoing construction of the marriage marquee” be halted.
The society says that the club has violated clauses in their agreement stopping it from adding extra facilities or allowing third parties to operate facilities. The former says they only put up the tent so the rain didn’t bother guests at weddings, which had been held at the club for many years.
Earlier, a civil court had granted the club a stay order against the society’s threat to disconnect the power supply to the club if they did not remove the tent. The club then filed a contempt of court petition against the society, stating that they had cut the lights despite the civil court’s stay order.
Bhatti told The Express Tribune he knew nothing of the civil court hearings, but was of the opinion that the registrar for cooperative societies had jurisdiction in this case. Azam’s petition names both the club and society as respondents.
