PA celebrates war victory amid protest

The Punjab Assembly's Panel of Chairmen, led by PML-N MPA Samiullah Khan, on Monday restrained the Opposition from criticism, urging all lawmakers to devote three days to celebrating Pakistan's recent military success.

The directive came after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker Junaid Afzal Sahi launched a scathing attack on Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, branding him a "swindler."

In response, Samiullah Khan, who was presiding over the session, called for restraint, emphasizing unity during a time of national pride.

"I would speak the truth even if my father was wrong," Sahi replied defiantly.

Khan, pressing further, questioned Sahi about a recent statement by Imran Khan's sister, Aleema Khan, who had downplayed the conflict as mere "noora kushti" (mock fighting). Sahi avoided answering.

The assembly session soon echoed with fervent chants by the treasury benches in support of the armed forces. Treasury members praised the military for what they termed a "historic victory," declaring that Pakistan's soldiers had "taught the enemy a lesson" despite limited resources.

Some members also chanted slogans labelling critics as traitors.

While the Opposition also hailed the bravery and success of the armed forces, they called for introspection and accountability.

Junaid Afzal Sahi criticised the absence of cabinet members on the first day of the session, saying, "The historian will not forget who chose to remain silent at such a crucial moment."

Treasury lawmakers rebutted the criticism, insisting that Pakistan's smaller size compared to India only made the military's achievement more remarkable. "We've grown tired of hearing that India is five times bigger," one member said, "but our forces have proven their resolve beyond doubt."

During the question hour, members from both sides raised concerns about the poor condition of roads.
