Gas meter thefts spike across Pindi

.

RAWALPINDI:

Unidentified thieves have begun stealing gas meters under the cover of night in various parts of the garrison city.

In a single night, at least 11 gas meters were stolen from the Dhok Elahi Bakhsh area under the jurisdiction of Waris Khan police station.

The stolen meters included those installed outside homes near Sunday Bazaar and in the street opposite the Government Degree College in the same locality.

Waris Khan police have registered a report of the thefts. Affected residents including Sharif Qureshi, Nimra Bibi, and Nadeem Sheikh reported that the thefts occurred during the early hours between Thursday and Friday.

The thieves not only removed the meters but also managed to shut off the gas supply to prevent leakage.

Residents initially believed there was a gas outage when their stoves failed to ignite in the morning.

However, upon checking outside later in the day, they discovered the meters had vanished.

According to the Sui Gas department, none of the affected consumers were defaulters, and the department does not remove meters at night—only during official hours.

Residents have submitted CCTV footage capturing the theft to the police for investigation.
