Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti on Friday assured the Assembly that any security personnel found guilty of extortion or bribery would face strict legal consequences, urging lawmakers to provide credible evidence of such misconduct.
The assurance came during a heated Assembly session, following a resolution moved by Jamaat-e-Islami MPA Maulana Hidayatur Rahman, who alleged that certain law enforcement officers were extorting bribes from transporters on highways across the province.
Responding to the claims, Chief Minister Bugti rejected what he described as "sweeping allegations" but reiterated his government's commitment to transparency and accountability.
"We cannot allow anyone to misuse their authority. If there is credible proof, action will be taken without any delay," Bugti told the house, calling on legislators to assist in rooting out misconduct with concrete evidence.
Maulana Rahman delivered a passionate address, calling for an end to what he termed the exploitation and harassment of citizens by uniformed officials.
However, following the chief minister's assurances, the resolution was withdrawn and the matter was formally disposed of.
The discussion drew participation from lawmakers across party lines, including Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran, Dr Abdul Malik Baloch, and other members of both opposition and treasury benches.
Many highlighted the dire economic conditions in Balochistan and called for immediate government intervention.
Dr Baloch, chief of the National Party, stressed the need for structural reforms and sustainable economic planning.
"People are losing hope due to widespread poverty and unemployment. The government must respond with concrete policies and effective incentives," he said.
Echoing similar concerns, Sardar Khetran called for special programs to support low-income families and expand employment opportunities.
"Development must reach the doorstep of the common man," he emphasized.
