Jake Schreier, the filmmaker behind Thunderbolts, is reportedly in early talks to direct Marvel Studios’ long-anticipated X-Men reboot, according to Deadline.
Although a deal has yet to be finalized, Schreier has emerged as the top candidate after recently sitting down with Marvel execs.
This development arrives on the heels of Thunderbolts’ breakout success.
The film has been met with critical acclaim and has pulled in $162 million globally in its opening run, making it Marvel’s best-reviewed film since Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The project is being produced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, with the script handled by Michael Lesslie, known for his work on The Hunger Games franchise.
Schreier’s apparent passion for the source material reportedly helped him stand out.
As a lifelong fan of the X-Men comics, his pitch is said to have impressed studio brass, mirroring Marvel’s tendency to elevate directors from within the fold, as seen with the Russo Brothers’ leap from Captain America sequels to Avengers: Endgame.
Since Disney’s acquisition of Fox in 2019, fans have been eager for a modern cinematic revival of the mutant saga.
With the success of X-Men ‘97 on Disney+ and the record-breaking box office run of Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel seems primed for a new era of mutant storytelling with Schreier potentially leading the charge.
