Is Alberto Del Rio returning to WWE?
WWE is making major waves in the international wrestling scene, reportedly signing multiple stars from Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, including the high-profile and controversial return of former WWE World Champion Alberto Del Rio.
The move comes in the wake of WWE’s reported acquisition of AAA, marking a significant global expansion effort by the company. The news was first reported by Super Luchas Editor-in-Chief Ernesto Ocamo, who revealed on X that several standout AAA performers are now under WWE contract.
The list of signees reportedly includes Alberto El Patron (formerly Alberto Del Rio), Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr., Hijo del Vikingo, La Parka, La Hiedra, Lady Flammer, Lady Maravilla, and Niño Hamburguesa.
Del Rio, a four-time WWE World Champion, departed the company in 2016 and has since faced multiple controversies, including legal issues and a violent altercation in Tijuana that led to a six-month ban.
In that incident, Del Rio threw a chair during a fan confrontation, striking a woman in the face and resulting in hospitalisation.
Despite the checkered past, WWE appears willing to give El Patron another shot. While it’s unclear if he’ll return to WWE’s televised programming, he is expected to continue working AAA events during the transition.
The acquisition is reportedly set to be finalised later this year. WWE has already begun integrating its influence into AAA shows, with Rey Mysterio making a special appearance at the first event under the new partnership.
The move signals WWE’s aggressive strategy to deepen its presence in Latin America and bring Lucha Libre talent into the mainstream fold.
