In an emotional interview with People magazine, Michael Bolton has revealed his struggle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, and how his family has supported him through his toughest challenge yet.

The 72-year-old Grammy-winning singer, who has sold over 75 million records during his 50-year career, was diagnosed with glioblastoma in December 2023 after undergoing emergency brain surgery to remove a brain tumor. Bolton's neuro-oncologist, Dr. Ingo Mellinghoff of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, noted that full tumor removal occurs in only 30 to 40 percent of glioblastoma cases, making Bolton's recovery remarkable. Despite enduring a second surgery in January 2024 due to an infection and undergoing radiation and chemotherapy, Bolton's recent MRI scan in early April showed no signs of the tumor's return.

Bolton, whose speech, short-term memory, and mobility have been affected by the treatments, shared with People, “Succumbing to the challenge is not an option. You’re really quickly drawn into a duel. I guess that’s the way you find out what you’re made of.” Throughout this journey, Bolton has remained resolute, often leaning on his sense of humor and determination to keep going.

One of the highlights of his recovery was singing shortly after surgery. His daughter Holly, 47, recalls the moment, saying, “I remember one of the nurses had no idea who he was, and she’s like, ‘Do you know he sings like this?’” Bolton's daughter Isa, 49, and Taryn, 45, have also rallied behind their father, staying focused on joyful moments to balance the emotional toll of the situation.

Living in Westport, Connecticut, Bolton continues to engage in activities that bring him comfort, including daily meditation, golf, and voice therapy. He also spends quality time with his six grandchildren, enjoying family trivia nights.

Bolton’s sense of legacy has evolved. While he once considered his career achievements as his legacy, he now places greater importance on imparting life lessons and love to his daughters. Reflecting on his mortality, he remarked, “I think we develop capabilities and problem management, and we learn how to make the best out of a bad situation.”

Despite the challenges, Bolton remains hopeful and determined. “I want to keep going. I feel there’s still a lot to do on the fight side,” he said, adding with a smile, “I got a title for a song: ‘Ain’t Going Down Without a Fight.’”
