The first season of NCIS: Origins wrapped with a dramatic finale that placed Cecilia "Lala" Dominguez’s future in jeopardy after a devastating car crash. In the closing moments, Lala swerves to avoid a child and suffers severe injuries, leaving fans questioning whether she will survive to appear in the confirmed second season.
Showrunners David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal revealed that the crash was always intended to be a major plot point, aiming to portray how life can change in an instant. "We wanted to tell stories that seem honest and true," North explained. Monreal added, "We were always pretty set on an accident," clarifying that the scene was designed to emphasise chance over crime-related violence.
The finale also brought an emotional shift for Gibbs, played by Austin Stowell, who finally confronts the consequences of killing Pedro, the man responsible for his family's deaths. Writers considered multiple versions of whether Gibbs would keep his secret but ultimately chose transparency, adding depth to his character's moral code. Gibbs’ growing bond with Lala was highlighted throughout the episode, although the pair stopped short of kissing, remaining faithful to Gibbs' sense of honour.
Producers teased more storylines for season 2, including a deeper exploration into Mike Franks' relationship with his brother, a new addition yet to be cast. Fans also got an early glimpse at Diane, Gibbs’ future wife, ensuring the series continues to align closely with NCIS canon.
As North and Monreal confirmed, NCIS: Origins season 2 promises "big swings" and fresh twists, with the fate of key characters still hanging in the balance.
