ISLAMABAD:

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has accepted the PPP's intra-party elections and issued its notification as well as certificate.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was re-elected as the PPP chairman for a four-year term in intra-party polls held at the Central Secretariat in the federal capital on April 12. Humayun Khan was elected as party's secretary general for four years while Nadeem Afzal Chan as information secretary for the same period.

Similarly, Amna Piracha was elected as finance secretary. The office-bearers of the PPP were elected in accordance with the party's constitution.

According to a report published in The Express Tribune, several senior party leaders from Punjab remained completely unaware of the elections. Those who were aware said they had learned about it through social media.

None of the leaders could say who the candidates were or whether the winners had faced any opposition or were elected unopposed. Nearly all expressed disappointment over not even being informed about the date of the election.

Nadeem Afzal Chan, who himself was among the winners, told The Express Tribune that he had submitted his nomination papers. However, when asked how he found out about the election results, he admitted he was not fully aware.

The ECP in Dec 2023 declared PTI's intra-party elections null and void. The Supreme Court upheld the decision, which resulted in depriving it of its election symbol.
