Sindh to put price cap on branded goods to curb profiteering
The provincial government decided on Monday to regulate prices of branded items sold in the city's supermarkets and superstores.
To achieve this, detailed data on manufacturing costs and profit margins will be collected. This will help establish fair prices for essential goods in the market.
A meeting, chaired by Bureau of Supply and Prices Director General Zahid Hussain Shar, was held on Friday with senior officers and representatives of major supermarkets and retail chains in attendance to discuss the matter.
DG Shar emphasised the importance of registering warehouses with the Bureau of Supply and ensuring timely renewal. He stressed that protecting consumer rights is crucial and that the Bureau will strictly enforce the Consumer Protection Act.
With special authority granted by the Sindh government, the Bureau will control prices of essential commodities, prevent hoarding and profiting, and determine prices of branded goods made in Karachi. By next month, standardised prices for branded commodities will be set after collecting data on manufacturing costs and profit margins.
DG Shar directed officials to regulate prices effectively and prevent undue profiteering. This initiative aims to make branded goods affordable for the city's citizens and curb rising inflation.
