Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders face global challenges as US and Japan struggle with stock amid high demand
Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 have launched globally, but not without complications. While demand has been high across all markets, supply chain issues have caused setbacks in the United States and Japan, resulting in stock cancellations and revised order processes.
In the United States, major retailers including Target and Walmart opened pre-orders earlier this week. Many customers who initially secured their orders at Target reported that their reservations were later cancelled due to insufficient stock. Walmart has followed a rolling availability model, with new units appearing briefly before quickly selling out.
GameStop has limited pre-orders to select customers by invitation, requiring a $50 deposit. Nintendo’s official online store is also operating on an invite-only basis, with eligibility linked to existing Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions and gameplay activity.
Japan has seen even greater complications. According to Nintendo Japan, pre-order registrations exceeded 2.2 million — far beyond current shipping capacity. The company has announced that not all requests can be fulfilled in time for the initial release. As a result, a lottery system will determine which customers can order the console, with additional orders postponed to later dates.
In contrast, the UK market has experienced brisk but manageable demand. Though stock has sold out rapidly, local retailers have received additional allocations to meet consumer interest. South Africa has reported particularly strong pre-order numbers, with many bundles already sold out and awaiting restock.
Despite these regional disparities, Nintendo remains on course for a global launch of the Switch 2 on 5 June. The new console is positioned as a major upgrade to its predecessor, with enhanced graphics, improved battery life, and a refreshed design.
